Is There a Connection Between Unexplained Fever and Tinnitus?

There is no direct connection between unexplained fever and tinnitus. 

However, in some cases, an underlying medical condition that causes fever can also lead to tinnitus as a symptom. For example, infections such as meningitis or Lyme disease can cause fever and tinnitus. In these cases, treating the underlying condition may also help reduce the symptoms of tinnitus.

But the tinnitus itself is not a symptom of fever. Tinnitus is typically caused by damage to the inner ear, exposure to loud noise, or other medical conditions such as hearing loss.

There are other examples of underlying symptoms that can cause fever and tinnitus. They include:

  • Meniere's disease. Meniere's disease is an inner ear disorder that can cause vertigo, hearing loss, and tinnitus. In some cases, it may also cause fever.
  • Acoustic neuroma. Acoustic neuroma is a benign tumor that grows on the nerve responsible for hearing and balance. It can cause tinnitus and in some cases, fever.
  • Autoimmune disorders. Certain autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and scleroderma, can cause fever and tinnitus as symptoms.
  • Anemia. Anemia is a condition where there is a lack of red blood cells in the body. It can cause fatigue, weakness, and fever, as well as tinnitus.
  • Migraines. Migraines can cause severe headaches, nausea, and vomiting, as well as fever and tinnitus in some cases.
  • Thyroid disorders. Thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, can cause fever and tinnitus as symptoms.
  • Trauma. Trauma to the head or ear can cause tinnitus, as well as fever if an infection develops as a result.
  • High blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause fever, as well as tinnitus and other symptoms such as headaches and dizziness.
  • Ototoxicity. Ototoxicity is a condition where certain medications or chemicals can damage the inner ear and cause hearing loss and tinnitus. It can also cause fever in some cases.

Medications Can Worsen Tinnitus Symptoms

Some common medications can actually heighten the ringing and whistling noises in your head and ears.  Tinnitus sufferers have found this out to their dismay, and warn others to be wary of large dosages (in excess of 600 mg) of Ibuprofen, for instance, and even to be careful when taking aspirin.  In fact, there are people who insist that certain medications don't just make the condition worse, but can actually cause tinnitus. If you've got temporary hearing loss or tinnitus after being at a loud concert or sports event, you may be able to fix it -- if you act fast. A 2021 Keck Medicine of USC study published in Science Daily  has found that the nerve damage to the inner ear caused by loud noises is basically a build up of fluids.
